Our Story

More than a bakery

Hammond Bread grew out of resilience — hard times, strong family, and the kindness of a community that lifted us when we needed it most. What started as a way to heal and give back has become a gathering place where people feel at home. Every loaf tells a story of hope, gratitude, and the belief that something good can always rise.

Joy in the Kitchen

When Fox 13 returned to share an update on our journey, what stood out most wasn’t the bread but the joy — a kitchen filled with teamwork, laughter, and people having fun together. That spirit is the heartbeat of our bakery, from cinnamon rolls to custom cookies and hands-on baking classes that bring people closer, inspire creativity, and make everyone feel at home.

Our Family Bakery

What began as a small project at home quickly became a true family bakery. In 2022, with Trevor and the kids by my side, we opened our storefront in downtown Arlington. Every day since has been shaped by the community that helped us rise. Inside, you’ll find warmth, connection, and the joy of baking shared with friends old and new.

I Bake People Happy

Beyond the Bread

In 2019, Fox 13 shared our story, featuring my son, my right-hand man, helping in the bakery every day. I spoke about why I love Arlington — a community that carried our family through some of the hardest times. It wasn’t just bread we shared, but the generosity, and unwavering support of neighbors who lifted us up and made every day brighter.

Market Days

Before there was a storefront, Hammond Bread found its rhythm at holiday bazaars, pop-up shops, and farmers markets. I shared fresh bread and friendly smiles with my girls, memorizing names and stories, while Isaac baked and arranged our goods, filling the tent with warmth and the smell of fresh bread. Together, we made each market feel like a little community of our own.

Hammond Bread: First Loaves

The First Loaves

In the beginning, baking became a way to support my daughters’ cheerleading. The girls wore their uniforms and gave a quick cheer as we carried warm loaves to neighbors and friends. Each visit wasn’t just about bread — it was about connection, shared smiles, and the quiet joy of building community, one loaf at a time.

Where It Started

In 2011, at just 33 and with three kids under 8, I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. The Arlington community didn’t just show up — they carried me through my hardest season. During that time, I found comfort in baking, even when the first rolls were more rustic than fluffy. Those humble loaves planted the seeds of something beautiful.

Cookie’s Legacy

Long before Hammond Bread, Trevor’s mom, Virginia Ruth Merritt — called Cookie as a child — was known for filling church reception halls with beautiful wedding cakes, handmade candies, and the love she poured into every celebration. Trevor still remembers riding along, steadying those cakes on the way to someone’s special day. Her favorite color was blue — woven through her home, her wardrobe, and now, through our bakery. The same blue graces our logo, and her old piping tips still swirl frosting here today — a sweet reminder that what we’re building began long ago, with her steady hands and generous heart.
